Dietary Fiber Intake in Subjects with Non-Insulin-Dependent Diabetes Mellitus

Abstract
Background:
@EN American Diabetes Association currently recommends 40g/day (or 25g/1000 kcal) or more dietary fiber (DF) consumption for diabetic subjects. Mean daily intake of DF in non-diabetic Korean adults has been reported to be 17.3g, below the
recommended
amount (20~30g) for healthy adults. This study was conducted to estimate total daily DF intake and to investigate the major food sources of DF in diabetic subjects.
@ES Method:
@EN Food consumption data have been collected by means of three-day dietary records or 24-hour recall interviews from 89 diabetic subjects (male 34, female 55). Korean food composition table and the data on total dietary fiber in Japanese foods
were
used to calculate total dietary fiber intake and to analyze the major DF sources of the subjects.
@ES Results:
@EN Mean daily DF intake of the subjects was 17.0¡¾8.8g, 10.5¡¾5.5g/1000kcal, range being 5.5~41.2g. It was found that only 5% of the subjects consumed more than the recommended DF intake for the diabetics (40g/day). The major food sources for
DF
in
diabetic subjects were vegetables, cereals, legumes, fruits and seaweeds and the percentage of contributions of the food groups to the DF intake were 35.9% (6.1g), 19.4%(3.3g), 13.5% (2.3g), 12.4% (2.1g) and 10.6% (1.8g) respectively. Positive
correlations were found between total DF intake and most of nutrients intakes, with the highest with crude fiber (r=0.825).
@ES Conclusion:
@EN These results pointed that in non-insulin-dependent diabetics the amount of dietary fiber consummed daily are to be increased.
